ASHLAND — The Ashland County Junior Fair Board will again be participating in the Fight the Hunger, Stock the Trailer competition.

Stock the Trailer is sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America/Rural 1st and encourages Jr. Fair Boards around Ohio to step up and make a difference in their community by collecting food for local food banks.

Stock the Trailer is a statewide competition whose purpose is to collect food donations for hunger shelters and food banks around Ohio.

Sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America, counties that participate in the event receive $500 towards their Jr. Fair Board in addition to a chance to win other support based on how many pounds of food are collected.

The county that collects the most pounds of food in each region receives $5,000, the 2nd place county will receive $3,500, and the 3rd place county will receive $1,500. The statewide goal for the event is to collect 250,000 pounds of food.

Last year, 55 counties participated, collecting a total of 169,456lbs of food that went to 74 food banks.

The Ashland County Jr. Fair Board will begin collecting items for Stock the Trailer on Aug. 19 and 20 during the 4-H Super Judging event held at the Ashland County Fairgrounds and will continue through the Ashland County Fair.

Items that will be accepted at Super Judging are: cases of water, canned food, pasta sauce, peanut butter, pasta, other non-perishable items.

This year, the Jr. Fair Board’s goal is to get in the top 3 for the region and collect more than the 4,920 pounds that were collected in Ashland County last year.

Please consider helping the Ashland County Jr. Fair Board reach those in need in our community by participating in the Fight the Hunger, Stock the Trailer event this year.

The Education section is brought to you by Ashland Family YMCA.
