Yard with flowers blooming in front of house with fence along sidewalk
Ashland's Yard of the Month is located at 1130 King Road (corner of Keen Avenue and King Road). It is the home of Leona Glass.

ASHLAND — What do a swing, a shed, pots of flowers and a porch with a seating area have in common?

“They are all inviting signs,” according to Kim Tanner, Art of Gardening Club member.

The “very nice yard” at 1130 King Road (corner of Keen Avenue and King Road) is the home of Leona Glass who was just as welcoming to Art of Gardening members Sept. 6 when they named her September’s “Yard of the Month” recipient.

Along with $50 Farm and Home Hardware gift certificates members Cathy Siwek, Sally Ahlers and Claudia Dunn presented an Art of Gardening sign for display in the winning yard.

When Charles and Leona Glass moved there in 1979 the house had been built but never lived in.

Prior to that the lot and a half had once been an orchard.

The front yard which has been done “very precisely” sports butterfly bushes (very attractive to hummingbirds which the winner enjoys watching), hydrangea, a Japanese maple, a blue spruce and plum trees.

Geese grace the wall of the front porch – she likes geese. Bowling ball shrubs, 25 of them, adorn the property.

Also featured on the property are 25 Green Giant evergreen trees. The half lot adjacent features the inviting red shed and outdoor patio swing.

Trips to the library and playing euchre keep the reigning “Yard of the Month” winner entertained.
