ASHLAND — The Ashland Musical Club invites the community to a Sunday recital on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran Church, 508 Center Street in Ashland.
Performing will be Nuova Pratica, a New York City-based ensemble which focuses on composition and improvisation in historical and historical-adjacent styles.
Featured performers are Ashland native Charlie Reed (viola da gamba), Nicola Canzano (harpsichord), and Ellen Sauer, (baroque flute), presenting a recital of music written by the performers as well as some pieces by baroque composers Couperin, Leclair, and Blavet.

(The viol preceded the cello in the Renaissance and baroque periods. It is fretted like a guitar, typically six-stringed, held vertically and played with a bow.)
This is a benefit concert for the Ashland Musical Club’s Scholarship Fund, which since the 1940s has aided music education by awarding a scholarship to a high school senior who will be taking music classes in college.
All donations from this recital go to that scholarship fund. Many of those who are currently active in Ashland’s musical life were recipients of this scholarship, including Charlie Reed, who was a 2012 recipient.
A reception follows the concert. The church sanctuary is ground-level accessible.
The Ashland Musical Club was founded in 1900 by some of Ashland’s most prominent women to promote good music and music education.
Now open to men as well, it is affiliated with the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs.
