BELLVILLE: Margery Jean Long Stoodt passed away on February 17, 2024 after a brief illness. She was 99.
She was born on August 28, 1924 to parents John O. & Bertha (Etz) Long in their home on Bott Road in Richland County, Ohio. On December 25, 1943 she married the love of her life, George F. Stoodt, in Rapid City, South Dakota, and they shared 46 wonderful years of marriage together. Now they are together again.
Margery worked at Stoodt’s Grocery for many years before she began her journey to become a teacher. Through her hard work she attained her B.S. from Ohio University and her Master’s degree in Childhood Education (Cum Laude) from Ohio State University – all while caring for her three children at home. Margery continued her life’s work by teaching at Clearfork School District for 21 years and authoring Benny “B” and Willy “W”, a book that young children learning to read have enjoyed.
She took pleasure in playing piano and violin, playing cards, traveling to all 50 states, and keeping in touch with her pen pal Hilda in Canada for the last 87 years. She also enjoyed attending St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville, where she was a long-time member. But above all, Margery cherished spending time with her family and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a natural caregiver and always sought to make everyone feel better. Her enthusiastic and happy nature will be missed by so many, but without a doubt she would want everyone to remember to “still enjoy life,” like she did for many years.
Margery is survived by her daughters Robin (Ken) McCreary, Georjean Stoodt, and Kristal (Eric) Atkinson, grandchildren April Nolan, Sandy Miesle, Kathy McCreary, Jim McCreary, Erica Atkinson, Ray Atkinson, and Jonathan Atkinson, and six great-grandchildren Hailey and Olivia Nolan, Ben, Alexis, and Peyton Miesle, and Jade Linman.
In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sister Betty Long Barton.
A celebration of Margery’s life will be held on July 20, 2024, please check back for further details.
