To the Editor:
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office these past eleven years. As Sheriff Risner’s final term comes to an end, I want to commend him for the tremendous legacy of service he leaves behind.
Few sheriffs in Ohio’s history have served with the distinction and excellence as Sheriff Risner. He has expanded services and elevated the Sheriff’s Office to one of the highest-rated in the state. It has been a pleasure to serve under him as chaplain and alongside the wonderful men and women of this agency.
As the primary election draws near, I have spent time with both candidates running for Ashland County Sheriff. While their experiences differ, their passion and dedication to the people of this community are equally apparent. In an age of polarization, Ashland is fortunate to have two passionate candidates for this important role.
Leading a complex agency like the Sheriff’s Office comes with challenges. Balancing state mandates for the jail, emergency communications, rural patrols, detective bureau, as well as, dive teams, K9 units, school resources officers, and local police contracts requires strong leadership. There will be growing pains.
However, our community can meet these transitions with gratitude, grace, and support. Regardless of the outcome, Ashland will continue to be served by high-quality public servants who care deeply for this place and its people.
It has been one of my greatest privileges to serve under Sheriff Risner, and I look forward with hope to working alongside the next Sheriff, whoever that may be.
Heavenly Father, we ask for your blessing and guidance on this election and transition. May your spirit of discernment, wisdom, and peace prevail.
In hope,
Ashland County Sheriff’s Chaplain
