Donald Edwin Hiner, 95
Donald Edwin Hiner, 95 of Sebring, FL, formerly of Ashland, OH, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
He was born on July 21, 1928 in Ashland, the son of the late J.P. and Edith Norton Hiner.
His early years were spent on the family turkey farm on Claremont Avenue. There was also a Sohio filling station there. His love for cars seemed like a perfect fit there! Later in life, he restored a 1915 Model T and for his wife, Jerrie, a vintage Volkswagen with a trailer to match. They won many car shows!
Don graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1947. Following his graduation, Don proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine. After the Air Force, he worked for his brother, Hank at the Hayesville Feed Store and was a projectionist at the Ashland Schines Theater.
He retired from the Columbia Gas of Ohio after 29 years.
Following his retirement, he moved to Columbia, Tennessee in 1997, they later moved to Sebring, Florida.
One of his greatest accomplishments was becoming a 32nd degree Master Mason; he was also an Al Koran Shrine in the Cleveland area. Don was a member of the American Legion in Jeromesville and Ashland, Jeromesville Lion’s Club, Elks, and Model T Club.
He married his wife, Geraldine Brooks Jackson on November 29, 2003. They loved to travel in their 5th wheel trailer.
They previously had an Airstream trailer which traveled to both Alaska and Mexico twice with the Airstream Club. His love of travel was extended overseas when in 1976 he spent six weeks touring Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok.
Don’s passion was riding his bike, walking, golfing and watching The Ohio State football games!
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Jerrie of Sebring, FL. Three daughters, Debbie (Bill) Leffel of Mansfield, OH, Susie (David) Jackson of Pulaski, TN and Julie (Max) Babcock of Bellville, OH; two sons, John (Patricia) Hiner of McMinnville, TN and Jim Hiner of Mt Vernon, OH; a bonus son, John Waverly (Stephanie) Jackson, Jr of Columbia, TN; Many grandchildren. One brother, Henry (Norma) of Ashland, OH; Special friends: Bob Baker and Michelle of Sebring, FL.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Hank (Liz) Hiner, Betty (Ken) Carnahan, Mary Anne (Richard “Dick”) Forbes.
Private interment services will be held at a later date in the New Pittsburgh Cemetery. The Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
