ASHLAND — Ila Winland was selected the winner of the Art of Gardening Club’s “Yard of the Month.”
A young bride when she and her husband purchased their home at 109 8th St., Ashland, Winland has resided there since she was 16 years old.
Members Cathy Siwek, Sally Ahlers and Claudia Dunn chose Winland and awarded gift certificates from the club and Farm and Home Hardware.
The blue house with a white picket fence and a cute little bench drew Art of Gardening
members to check out the yard. An array of flowers and plants adorn the front porch as
well as the front and sides of the porch. Featured are a Weeping Cherry, rhododendron,
Hosta, English lavender, pink azalea, petunias, marigolds and grasses. Also, a Golden Pothos, which she keeps in her bedroom in the winter graces her front porch.
She and her husband, Roy, were the parents of three daughters, Christine, Carol and
Juanita and one son, Roy, Jr. Roy was employed 47 years by the City of Ashland “doing
everything.” They were married 62 years before he passed away nine years ago.
Grandmother of five and great-grandmother of 17, she ran a day care out of her home. She
speaks with pride of her red door which her son, Roy, Jr. fixed up for a Mother’s Day present
one year. A sidewalk on the right side of the porch and steps lead up to the 100-year-old
door refurbished with five coats of paint.
One of 14 children, the yard winner told of baking 24 pies from scratch for a reunion and
making noodles laid out all over the place.
She is a member of First Baptist Church-Ashland along U.S. Route 42.
