Floyd “Chip” Poland, 69

Floyd “Chip” Poland, 69, of Savannah passed away on Thursday evening, June 20, 2024 at OhioHealth MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield.

He was born on June 15, 1955 in Ashland the son of the late Arthur J. Poland and E. Mae (nee Houser) Poland.

Chip graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1973. He went on to further his education and attended Aultman College for his paramedic and firefighter training.

Chip married the love of his life, the former Jane Humbert, on October 2, 1976.

After more than 23 years, Chip retired from the Ashland Fire Department in 2002 where he served as Assistant Chief, Captain, and as a firefighter/medic. In 1976 he joined the Savannah Fire Company where he remained active until 2002, proudly serving as Chief of the Savannah Fire Company from 1990 to 1993.

Chip also served as the mayor of Savannah for 12 years from 1984 to 1996. He was truly born with a servant’s heart, always putting the needs of others in front of his own. After retirement, Chip enjoyed driving for the local Amish community and lending a helping hand to friends and neighbors whenever he was able.

When Chip was not serving his community with his friendly disposition, he loved traveling and spending time with his “wifey” and he loved supporting his beloved children and grandchildren at their school and sporting events. Over the years, he was a member of the Savannah Lions Club, Crestview Athletic Boosters and was a Clear Creek Township Trustee. He was deeply involved at the Savannah Youth ball fields for many years, he enjoyed playing on the Adario Dartball team alongside his son in law and having dinner on Wednesday evenings with friends. He also enjoyed spending time outside, gardening, fishing and camping.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mrs. Jane Poland of Savannah; one son, Matthew (Trista) Poland; one daughter, Courtney (Zach) Ringler; four grandchildren, Nick Poland, and Ava, Kenley, and Foster Ringler; one sister, Sherri Strine; two sisters-in-law, Jody (Jeff) Spelman and Amy (John) Wise; his special nieces and nephews, Sonja (Jared) Crooks, Cari (Scott) Engelhardt, Tara (Josh) Kemp, Jonathan (Anne Marie) Spelman, Jordan (Amanda) Spelman, Brit (Susan) Brafford, Bethany (Shaun) Hickey, and Brooke (Merrill) Hudgens; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Chip is preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends may gather on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home. A private family interment service will be in the Savannah Cemetery.
