George B. Mitchell, Jr. passed away January 8, 2024 at Memorial Hospital in Marysville, Ohio. Born December 3, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of George B. (Sr.) and Helen Kathryn (Tobin) Mitchell.
A lifelong teacher in the Mansfield City Schools, Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann (Dongiovanni) Mitchell, his parents, and his son, George III. He is survived by his daughters Kathryn Esbenshade (John, deceased) of Ashland; Helen Marie (Tony) Hecker of Ashland; Nancy Foreman (Larry, deceased) of Galena, Ohio; Mary (Steve) Anderson of Ostrander, Ohio; Elizabeth Mitchell of Sunbury, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Mr. Mitchell was a graduate of Youngstown College, now Youngstown State University. In college, he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity and Sigma Tau Delta honorary English fraternity. He also did graduate work at The Ohio State University, Kent State University and Rutgers State University in New Jersey. He was a Jennings Scholar, a Ford Fellow and an Educational Testing Service intern.
An Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, Mr. Mitchell was a Past Grand Knight of Father Mahan Council 3541. As a former educator, he was Past President of Local 703 of the American Federation of Teachers. He was also an elected Precinct Committeeman and had been Treasurer of the Ashland County Central Democratic Committee.
While teaching at Mansfield Senior High, Mr. Mitchell was an Assistant Football Coach and Founder and Coach of the Rifle Team. A member of the Ashland Area Amateur Radio Club, he was active in “ham” radio and served as merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts.
A memorial mass for Mr. Mitchell will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Edward Catholic Church in Ashland with Father Rod Kreidler presiding. A meal and time of fellowship will follow in the Parish Activity Center.
