ASHLAND — The registration period for an annual farm tire collection event starts Monday.

The Ashland County Solid Waste District will host its third-annual farm tire collection event on Aug. 27 at the Ashland County Fairgrounds.

Registration will run from Aug. 5 to Aug. 23.

The event — open by appointment — is aimed only to serve the 1,200 farms across Ashland County that have large tires to dispose.

Tires from tractors, combines, loaders, skid steers, wagons, implements, semi trucks and trailers and light trucks will be accepted.

All tires must be off the rim, according to a flyer advertising the event.

How much does it cost?

The cost to dispose of the tires ranges from $2 to $10 apiece. All tires will be transported to a recycling center in Crawford County, said Jim Skora, the solid waste district’s director.

Prices per tire increased this year. In 2022 and 2023, the price per tire sat at $1. Skora said that’s because the solid waste district did not rely on grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency this year.

“From a fee standpoint, this is going to cover some of our cost,” Skora said, addressing Ashland County commissioners on Thursday.

He said the solid waste district spends an average of $12 to $14 to dispose each tire. Those figures include transportation, staffing, equipment and the cost of recycling.

“Clearly, we’re not making money and we’re not covering all our costs,” he said.

The event has collected roughly 7,300 tires from around 160 farms since 2022, Skora said.

Have more tires?

This event is the only sanctioned way Ashland County farmers can get rid of old, large tires.

But it’s not the only way residents can dispose of smaller tires.

The solid waste district has a scrap tire program, which operates through a voucher system.

Residents must obtain a voucher from one of five sites across the county. They are:

  • Ashland County Health Department: 1211 Claremont Ave. (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Ashland County Commissioners office: 110 Cottage St., 2nd Floor (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Loudonville Village Hall: 156 N. Water St. (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Madco Market (Formerly Polk Market): 401 N. Main St. (Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 8 a.m to 8 p.m.)
  • Sullivan Market: 246 State Route 58 (Sunday-Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
  • Jeromesville Market: 6 South High St. (Sunday-Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

Vouchers will specify where to deliver the tires.
