Mary Ann Koehler, 87

Mary Ann Koehler, 87 of Ashland passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, September 11, 2024 at Brethren Care Village after her family had gathered with her just days before her passing.

She was born on October 9, 1936 in Parkersburg, West Virginia to the late Glen and Emma Jean (nee Windom) Hanes.

Mary Ann graduated from Mount Vernon High School, Class of 1954. She went on to attend Capital University where she studied music.

She married the love of her life, Reverend Harold E. “Hal” Koehler on November 10, 1956.

While serving in her role as the pastor’s wife in Lutheran churches in Elkport & Moorhead, Iowa, as well as in Struthers and Ashland, Ohio, Mary Ann was a homemaker and taught piano lessons. When in Struthers, she attended business school and worked as a secretary before the family moved to Ashland.

She retired after many years as the secretary in the Ashland City Engineer’s Office. Along with her career, she was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she proudly served as the church organist & pianist. She also sang in the choir, was a member of the handbell choir, various Bible study groups and volunteered in the church office.

Mary Ann is survived by one daughter, Annette (Rick) Hagy of Dripping Springs, Texas; one son, Mark Koehler of Ashland; grandchildren, Trey (Katie) Hagy of Kyle, Texas, Aaron (Amber) Hagy of Camarillo, California, and Hannah Hagy of Hartford, Connecticut; great grandchildren, Asher and Ari Hagy; and a niece, Shawna (Greg) Balog of Kettering.

In addition to her parents, Mary Ann is preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Harold E. Koehler who passed from this life on December 28, 2017; one son, Harold E. Koehler Jr. who passed from this life on December 20, 2023; and one brother, Baird “Butch” Hanes who passed away July 4, 2018.

The Koehler family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Brethren Care Village and Gentiva Hospice. Mary Ann was a resident at Brethren Care since 2018, and the devotion and care she received there greatly enriched her life.

Funeral services followed by a meal and time of fellowship will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverend Kevin McClain presiding. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
