D. Jean Stauffer, 93
D. Jean Stauffer, 93 of Ashland passed away on Saturday afternoon, October 19, 2024 at the Inn at Ashland Woods.
She was born on July 7, 1931 in Mifflin Township, the daughter of the late H. Sherman and Elmina (nee Eby) Byerly.
Jean graduated from Hayesville High School in 1949 and went on to further study at Kent State University. She graduated from Ashland College.
She began her teaching career at Mifflin Township School in Richland County. She went on to teach at Montgomery, Osborn, and Grant Street School, retiring from Ashland City Schools.
Jean married Don Stauffer on June 6, 1953. They enjoyed traveling and had visited all 50 states and all the providences of Canada. The couple toured Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tahiti. They also attended many fairs in various places as well as Ohio.
Jean was a devoted member of the Christ United Methodist Church and the Help Hands Circle. She served on various boards at the church. Jean was a charter member of the Ashland County Fair Auxiliary and served as Vice President. For many years Jean was co-chairman of the antique committee of the Ashland County Fair, a charter member of the National Lincoln Highway Association and the Mid-Ohio LHA.
In her career as a teacher, she became a life member of the NEA-R, OEA-R, ORTA, and the ACRTA. A reserve member of the Delta Kappa Gamma and a member of the Gloriosa Club, Ashland Genealogy Society and spent her time volunteering at the Senior Citizen’s Center working in the clothing shop.
During their retirement years, both Don and Jean enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years, where she became active as a leader of the Ladies Club, secretary of their association and treasurer of the corporation.
Jean is survived by her loving family, her daughter, Mary Stauffer of Ashland; two sons, Gary (Joan) Stauffer of Ashland and Larry Stauffer of Ontario; a son-in-law, Gary Paullin of Mohicanville; six grandchildren, Amy Stauffer, Don (Melissa) Paullin, Sarah Shultz, Daniel (Rachel) Stauffer and Jenna and Julianne Stauffer; four great grandchildren, Garrett (Taylor) Thompson, Lexi Thompson, Stella Shultz, and Nicole Johnson Shultz; and one brother, Ted (Pat) Byerly of Ashland.
In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years of marriage Don Stauffer who passed away on October 1, 2008; and her daughter, Sherry Paullin.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. in the Christ United Methodist Church, 1140 Claremont Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805 with Reverend Tom Snyder presiding. A private family interment will be held in the Ashland Cemetery. Friends and family may call on Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ashland County Community Foundation, 300 College Avenue, Ashland, Ohio 44805, c/o Hayesville and Jeromesville Alumni.
