About the event:
During the pandemic in 2020, Ashland Chautauqua gathered (via Zoom) four founders of the modern Chautauqua movement: scholar/performers George Frein (Dr. Seuss, Herman Melville), Charles Pace (Frederick Douglass), Doug Watson (Will Rogers), and Kevin Radaker (Henry David Thoreau, C.S. Lewis, Winston Churchill). The result was an informative and moving story of the beginnings of the Chautauqua style of performance we enjoy each summer in Ashland and a review of some changes over the years.
Join us for a conversation about those delightful individuals and the wonderful tradition they started and nurtured. Two of them—George and Charles—have passed away. But, with video excerpts from their 2020 discussion, we will talk about the lively and entertaining programming that continues to draw audiences to Brookside Park.
Bring along your memories of a favorite scholar or character, or if you are new to Chautauqua, come and find out what it’s all about. Bring a friend!
Free and open to the public.
