ASHLAND — Summer officially began today, and with it the first blast of furnace heat is expected to roll through the region this weekend.
An Extreme Heat Watch is in effect for north central Ohio from Sunday, June 22 in the afternoon, through Tuesday, June 24 in the evening.
It’s possible the heat wave could extend into Wednesday, June 25.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will rise into the upper 80s to lower 90s on Saturday, reaching the mid-90s on Sunday.
Heat index values (what it feels like with humidity) are forecast to approach or exceed 100 degrees, potentially reaching 105 degrees or even topping 110 degrees at times during the hottest parts of the day.
Some are calling for record high temperatures on Monday. As this is Ohio, it’s also expected that the heat will be accompanied by high humidity.
As a result, heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity, especially for those involved in outdoor activities.
It’s recommended to limit strenuous outdoor activities during this period. If one must be outside, try to limit time directly in the sun, seek shade and/or find water activities.
People are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, stay out of the sun. Also, be a good neighbor and keep an eye on or be sure to check in on relatives and friends.
