ASHLAND — Dachshunds competed in the Ashland County Fair’s first-ever wiener dog race and costume contest on Monday.
The wiener dog race was completed in five rounds. The dogs competed in the first four rounds, which determined who’d race in the fifth.
The first place winners of each round:
- First round: Charley
- Second round: Sadie
- Third round: Whiskey
- Fourth round: Vin Diesel Von Wiener
In the final round, the first- and second-place winners of each round faced off for the first place prize of $400.
Ursa, second-place winner in the third round, took the crown and her owners, Pat and Ron Rothhaar, took the money.
Whiskey, owned by Andie Terry, placed second and won $250. Charley, owned by Jill Comer, placed third and won $150.
Directions Credit Union donated the prize money for the race and sponsored the costume contest.

Costume contest
The dachshunds stuck around for the costume contest, which immediately followed the race. A panel of seven judges, who are employees at Directions Credit Union, determined the winners.
The first-place costume winner was “Pawzy Pawsbourne,” which was Wall-E dressed as Ozzy Osbourne.
Second place went to the rock and roll fan: Remi, owned by Joanna Meyer. And third place went to the scarecrow.
The first place prize was $100, second place prize was $60 and third place prize was $40. All three winners received a doggie gift basket that included a dog bed, treats, toys and more.
Jill Comer, an employee at Directions Credit Union, said the staff wanted to represent Directions at the fair.
Comer, whose dogs Charley and Vin Diesel Von Wiener participated in the race, said she loves Wiener dogs so she spearheaded the idea for the race.
Comer said she hopes it will become an annual event at the fair.
