ASHLAND — An Ashland judge set bond for a Nova man who allegedly shot someone during a bar fight early Thursday. The shooting occurred at The Wagon Wheel in downtown Ashland at 1:28 a.m.

David Struckoff, 25, is being held in the Ashland County Jail on a second-degree felonious assault charge. He appeared before Ashland County Common Pleas Magistrate Paul Lange via Zoom on Friday, a day following his arrest in the shooting of Joe Hales.

Ashland County Assistant Prosecutor Matt Metcalf said Struckoff got into a fight with three people after a “decent amount of drinking.”

“Eventually, that altercation ends. And I believe this defendant goes to leave the bar after paying his tab and runs into the three again,” Metcalf said, addressing Lange.

Metcalf said another altercation started at that point, where “threats were made.”

“This defendant, ultimately, ran to his motor vehicle, grabbed a firearm and injected that into the situation,” Metcalf said. A criminal complaint filed against Struckoff lists the gun as a 9 mm Glock.

The prosecuting attorney said he believes the victim, identified in a court document as Hale, is still hospitalized. Police said on Thursday that Hale had been transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

Metcalf said Struckoff does not have a criminal history. But, he said, the charge is serious — as are Hale’s injuries. He requested that Lange set a cash bond of $50,000.

Struckoff said he intends to hire an attorney.

Lange set the bond at $50,000, per Metcalf’s request, and scheduled another hearing in the case for Tuesday.
