ASHLAND — This year marks a significant milestone as the United Way of Ashland County hosts the 31st annual Kay Conrad Day of Caring on Thursday, Oct. 23.
This is an event that continues to honor the compassionate vision of its namesake.
What began over three decades ago as a simple cleanup and repair initiative for local non-profit organizations has grown into a powerful tradition of community connection and
support — especially for seniors across Ashland County.
Inspired by Kay Conrad’s dedication to serving others, this annual day of service now focuses on helping older adults winterize their homes and complete essential outdoor tasks.
More than just a day of yard work, the Day of Caring fosters dignity, safety, and human connection for those who need it most.
This year’s event brings together 280 volunteers organized into 44 teams, all dedicated to making a tangible difference at 111 homes throughout the county.
From Ashland to West Salem, Loudonville, Perrysville, and Greenwich, no corner of the community is left untouched by the spirit of service.
“We are incredibly proud of how this event has grown,” said Stacy Schiemann, Executive Director of United Way of Ashland County. “Our community continues to step up year after year, and in 2025, we’ve worked hard to ensure this day is both impactful and meaningful for everyone involved.
“Volunteerism is becoming part of the workplace culture in Ashland County, and that’s something to truly celebrate.”
The effort is made possible through collaboration with United Way partner agencies, including the Ashland County Council on Aging and Appleseed Mental Health, who provide referrals for residents needing assistance.
United Way then matches those requests with the appropriate volunteer teams to ensure timely and effective service.
