LOUDONVILLE — The Loudonville-Perrysville High School sewer lines faced a back up on Monday, resulting in immediate maintenance totaling just under $50,000, according to Supt. Jennifer Allerding.
Allerding told the school board the issue, along with others, has happened before and only been resolved through quick fixes.
The sewage backup was caused by old, corroding pipes which have developed internal spokes that are catching waste flushed down the toilets.
A maintenance crew was working to descale the sewer lines and install a new lining on Monday evening in hopes of having the issue repaired for students on Tuesday.
Allerding said the maintenance will be necessary across the school campus to prevent further backups. She said she will work with the maintenance department to establish a plan for implementing the sewer line work.
“We’re at the point that we need to start addressing some of these issues in a more permanent fashion here at the high school complex,” Allerding said.
Two weeks ago, maintenance also addressed a leak at C.E. Budd Elementary School, which broke the control panels that run the heating system. Allerding did not have a maintenance cost readily available.
In her report, Allerding also updated the board on her plan to renovate and replace the football field bleachers.
She previously recommended the home-side bleachers be moved to replace the deteriorating visitor-side bleachers, and purchase new bleachers for the home-side.
That project in total would cost nearly $1 million, Allerding said, so instead, she recommendeed just replacing the visitor-side bleachers, which Allerding estimates will cost closer to $200,000.
“I just don’t know that, at this point in time, if that’s something that we need to be looking at when we have so many other things to address,” she said.
Allerding also noted she’s awaiting a quote for the reseeding and potentially installing an irrigation system on the soccer field. She estimates the project will cost $115,000 with a 100-day turnaround time.
“We beat up our field because we do all of our practice there. We do all of our games there. With irrigation, it would certainly look better than what it does,” she said.
In other business
The board authorized the advertising and seeking bids for two school buses, which will be equipped with a camera system along with other safety features, including a “stop arm.”
The board also approved the updated medical, dental and vision insurance rates, which increased by 8%, starting in 2026.
Those rates are set for two years when the insurance company will reevaluate rates.
Board members also approved the resignation for retirement of five teachers, one school counselor, the high school principal and assistant principal.
The retirements are set for the end of the school year, so the school district will have time to search for replacements.
