ASHLAND — A nearly 60-year-old Clear Creek Township bridge is in need of an upgrade in order to handle legal loads.
The Ashland County Board of Commissioners on Thursday accepted a bid from V.O. Menuez and Son, Inc. for the replacement of the 80-foot steel truss bridge along County Road 658, located about a mile and a half west of the village of Savannah.
Ashland County Engineer Ed Meixner told the board last week road salt has taken its toll on the structure that over the years.
Meixner said the bridge was built in 1969. The demolition and replacement of the bridge is estimated at $1.3 million, he said.
Ashland County was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission to help fund the project, Meixner said.
The project will likely begin next year, he told the board. The estimated completion date is June 17.
Five bids, listed below, were opened for the project on Aug. 6:
- Catts Construction, Inc. — $1,547,026.22
- JD Williamson Construction Co. — $1,415,083.67
- V.O. Menuez and Son, Inc. — $1,184,031.56 (low bid)
- Grassbaugh LLC — $1,294,088.64
- R & I Construction, Inc. — $1,220,475.34
Three of the five bids submitted came in under the $1.3 million estimate. The low bid from V.O. Menuez and Son, Inc., who was awarded the project Thursday, is about $116,000 under the estimate.
Also on Thursday, commissioners approved advertising to accept bids until Sept. 3 at 9:15 a.m. for the purchase of granular materials for the 2027 construction season for the Ashland County Highway Department.
