Delbert Kettering, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted servant of God, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026, at the age of 93. Born in Ashland, Ohio, on February 8, 1933, Delbert was the cherished son of Warring and Beula (Stambaugh) Kettering. His life was a testament to faith, love, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
Delbert shared a beautiful life with his loving wife, Betty (Kreiger), whom he married on June 7, 1959. Their marriage was a shining example of glory to God. Their union was blessed with four children: daughters Karen (Tony) Turley, Kathryn Roth, and Krista Thompson, and son Kevin (Joy) Kettering. He also leaves behind his brothers Dan and Merlyn Kettering, and sister Marilyn (Kettering) Badger. Delbert was the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored with all his heart. He is predeceased by his dear wife Betty, brother George Kettering, and sister Lorene (Kettering) Mills.
A graduate of Troy High School, Delbert pursued higher education at Manchester College and Bethany Seminary. His calling to serve the Lord was evident from birth, a commitment that he honored by dedicating 75 years as an ordained minister in the Church of the Brethren. Throughout his illustrious career, he led congregations at Elyria, Lake Breeze, Lakewood, Trinity, East Chippewa, and Mansfield First Church of the Brethren. Even after retiring from full-time ministry, Delbert continued to share the teachings of Jesus, spreading the message of God’s boundless love to all.
Delbert’s passions extended beyond his ministry. He was an avid collector and restorer of Allis Chalmers tractors, a hobby that brought him immense joy, especially when he had the chance to take his tractors to shows. His home was adorned with toy replicas of these tractors, which he joyfully gifted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fostering a legacy of shared interests and love.
Known for his sharp wit and radiant smile—his blue eyes twinkling with humor—Delbert touched the lives of everyone he met. His physical strength was remarkable, yet his gentle touch was like a whisper on a cool fall evening.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 5, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Mansfield First Church of the Brethren, located at 889 Grace St., Mansfield, OH 44905. The family invites all who knew Delbert to join in this informal gathering to honor his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the Ashland County Council on Aging, an organization close to Delbert’s heart.
