ASHLAND — Twenty years ago, a group of dedicated community partners came together with a shared goal: to improve the quality of life, health and well-being of older adults in Ashland County.

Today, the Older Adult Behavioral Health Coalition is proud to celebrate two decades of
advocacy, education and collaboration. Established in 2006, the coalition was built on the understanding that healthy aging involves much more than physical health.

Emotional well-being, social connection, access to resources and a sense of belonging are equally important. As Ashland County’s older adult population continues to represent a significant portion of our community, this mission is perhaps more important than ever.

Aging brings opportunities for growth, connection and fulfillment, but it can also present unique challenges. Social isolation, grief, caregiving responsibilities, financial concerns and changes in physical or cognitive health can all affect emotional well-being.

Ensuring that older adults and their caregivers have access to information, support and compassionate services is essential to building a healthy community.

Over the past 20 years, the coalition has helped bring attention to these needs through education, outreach and partnerships with local organizations. Among its longstanding initiatives is the Vial of Life, a simple but potentially lifesaving resource that allows individuals to keep important medical information readily available for emergency
responders.

The coalition also continues to recognize Elder Empowerment Month each June, promoting awareness of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation and the importance of protecting the dignity and independence of older adults.

Beyond these initiatives, the coalition provides an opportunity for community partners to exchange information, identify gaps in services and work together to address emerging concerns, including caregiver support, dementia education, suicide prevention and social isolation.

As we celebrate this 20-year milestone, we are also looking toward the future.

The Mental Health & Recovery Board of Ashland County is working to strengthen and revitalize the coalition, welcoming fresh perspectives, new partnerships and opportunities for meaningful collaboration.

We believe that a community that values its older adults is a stronger community for
everyone. Whether you work in healthcare, social services, education, faith-based organizations or simply have a passion for supporting older adults, your voice and involvement are welcome.

The Older Adult Behavioral Health Coalition meets quarterly on the third Tuesday of the month at 8 a.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 19, 2027.

As we reflect on 20 years of progress, we extend our appreciation to the many individuals and organizations who have contributed to this important work. Here’s to honoring the past, strengthening our partnerships and continuing to make Ashland County a place where older adults can thrive.
