SHELBY — Claire Korbas steeled her nerves, calmly sank the slippery putt and pumped her first as she walked off the green.

It was a fitting end to a sensational high school career.

If Korbas, the Richland Source Girls Golfer of the Year, never plays another round of competitive golf in her lifetime, she will have the memory of that final putt to cherish. Shelby’s three-time state qualifier helped the Whippets to a runner-up finish at the Division II state tournament at Ohio State’s Gray Course in mid-October, firing a two-day total of 155.

“I’m just happy I ended with a par. I really wanted to make that putt,” said Korbas, who tied for 13th individually. “I’m just so happy for our team.”

As a junior, Korbas helped lead the Whippets to a third-place finish. She shot a 153, good for sixth place overall. As a sophomore, she was 22nd with a 176.

“She had a great career for us,” Shelby coach Brad Ruminski said. “We’re going to miss her.”

Approach Shot

Amanda Ruminski, Shelby: If Korbas is the present of Shelby golf, then Ruminski is the future. The daughter of Shelby coach Brad Ruminski carded a team-best 153 at the state tournament, good for 12th place. Ruminski tied for third at the Valley View sectional with a 79 and finished seventh at the Sycamore Springs district, again shooting a 79.

Jedra

Isabelle Jedra, Lexington: Lady Lex moved up to Division I this year, but the jump in competition didn’t seem to bother Jedra, the younger sister of former Lex standout and Indiana University golfer Theresa-Ann Jedra. The younger Jedra led Lady Lex to a third-place finish at the Sycamore Springs sectional, shooting a team-best 89. The junior tied for 15th at the Stone Ridge district the following week, carding an 88.

Anna Watson, Ashland: A sophomore, Watson led the Arrows to an eighth-place finish at the Division I state tournament at Ohio State’s Gray Course. She shot a two-day total of 152, tied for 15th place. Watson was fourth at the Sycamore Springs sectional with an 84 and took sixth at the Stone Ridge district with a 78.

Kira Moore, Ashland: The Arrows could be a force for years to come with Moore and Watson leading the charge. A freshman, Moore was 28th at the state tournament with a two-day 159. She tied for first at the Sycamore Springs district with a 78 and finished 11th at the Stone Ridge district with an 84.
