ASHLAND — Largely due to an increase in sales tax revenue, the Ashland County Commissioners approved their largest budget ever Thursday morning.
The county’s sales tax revenue has jumped from more than $6.5 million in 2018 to more than $7 million in 2019, allowing the the county’s general fund for 2020 to grow to $15.3 million, up from $14.6 million in 2019.
This commissioners currently anticipate no budget cuts, but the it is reviewed monthly and could later be adjusted, Commissioner Michael Welch said.
He went on to say the “lion’s share” of new costs in the 2020 budget is for Job and Family Services. He estimates nearly 210 children are in custody — a growing number year over year.
“Last year, we got some funding from the government to help that. This year we’re not going to have that,” said Commissioner Jim Justice.
