ASHLAND — Ashland County’s political parties both gathered to kick off the 2020 election season Thursday evening at their own respective meetings.
The Ashland County Republican Party held its annual Lincoln Day Dinner at Ashland University’s Convocation Center, while the Ashland County Democratic Party held its annual Soup, Salad and Sundae Supper at the Ashland Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center.
At the Democratic get-together, the speakers were local candidates running for office. This included Steve Johnson for District 22 State Senate, Kevin Barnet for District 70 State Representative, and write in candidate Quentin Potter for US Congressional District 7.
“It was a fun evening of fellowship and information, and a great kickoff for the 2020 election cycle,” said Jane Stoops of the Democratic Party.
Nearby at Ashland University, area Republicans also introduced their local candidates and heard a speech from Bob Paduchik, a senior advisor to Donald Trump and the former co-chairman of the Republican National Committee. He highlighted what the president has accomplished since taking office.
Many Republicans will face off in the primary race March 17.
Candidates were introduced earlier last week at the Chamber’s non-partisan “Meet the Candidates” event.
