ASHLAND — Hundreds of ghouls and goblins showed off their frighteningly fashionable costumes Tuesday night in downtown Ashland.

Main Street closed traffic from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for Ashland Main Street’s Costume Capers event. Children and their families walked around collecting candy and showing off their costumes.

Businesses and organizations lined the street, handing out treats and hosting activities for the crowds. The event drew a wide range of costumes, from classic Halloween characters to superheroes and dinosaurs. The line of trick-or-treaters stretched across the corner and onto Claremont Avenue.

Ashland Main Street Executive Director Sandra Tunnel said organizers anticipated large crowds. Some participants arrive early to make sure they have enough candy to keep up with the crowds.

One particularly fitting stop was Mayor Matt Miller handing out M&M’s alongside the candy’s colorful mascots.

Ashland University students wore capes and greeted families, and the Ashland basketball team offered kids a chance to shoot hoops.

The Ashland City Teachers Association, Ashland Kroc Center, Ashland Fire Department and Ashland County Park District were some of the local organizations joining businesses in the festivities.

Even four-legged friends joined in the fun. Dogs dressed in their best Halloween outfits as their families made their way through downtown.

Adults can join in on the trick-or-treating this Friday at the Costume Crawl. The event coincides with October’s Final Friday, with extended shopping hours and the opportunity to participate in the raffle. The Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) also will be open.

Costume Crawl runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
