TOKYO — Former Ashland University track & field star Katie Nageotte won the gold medal Thursday in the women’s pole vault at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Nageotte, a 30-year-old from Olmsted Falls, Ohio, cleared 4.90 meters (16 feet, 1 inch) to win gold. Russia Olympic Committee’s Anzhelika Sidorova took silver and Holly Bradshaw of Great Britain earned bronze.
News reports said it was a “remarkable comeback for Nageotte, who almost failed to clear her opening height but then had only two misses the rest of the way.”
Nageotte competed at Ashland University most recently in 2013-2014, according to the university website.
She finished seventh at the most recent world championships, in 2019 in Doha, Qatar. She finished first at the U.S. Olympic trials to earn a spot on the American team.
