SMITHVILLE — A Smithville man was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle crash on Saturday night, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
John P. Murray, of Smithville was ejected from his vehicle after the incident at 6:10 p.m. on Smithville Western Road, west of State Route 83 in Wayne Township in Wayne County.
His twelve year old juvenile passenger was transported to Wooster Community Hospital by Central Fire Department then later life flighted to Akron Children’s Hospital.
The crash involved a black 2006 Cadillac CTS driven by Murray. Initial investigation revealed Mr. Murray was westbound on Smithville Western Road. He traveled partially across the centerline and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle continued driving off the right side of the roadway striking a ditch, fence and overturned ejecting the driver. The vehicle came to final rest on its roof.
Alcohol does not seem to be a factor in this crash. Murray was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
The Wayne County Coroner’s Office and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office assisted on scene.
