ASHLAND — A Legacy Estate Gift from the Herbert L. Heyl Trust in the amount of $131,782.00 will provide immediate support for comfort care and bereavement services at Hospice of North Central Ohio and fund a new $10,000 HNCO Memorial Endowed fund in Heyl’s name at The Ashland County Community Foundation.

Heyl, who died in November 2020 was a longtime resident of Ashland. He was a Korean War veteran and retired public school teacher. Heyl was a graduate of Ashland High School and Ashland University.

“Endowing our non-profit organization’s core mission programs continues to be on-going strategic objective at Hospice of North Central Ohio,” said Ralph Tomassi, HNCO Chief Development Officer/Senior Administrator. “We are grateful for Mr. Heyl’s philanthropic heart and his desire to provide a portion of his estate for HNCO.

“It is appropriate that we perpetuate his memory in this community where he was well known and respected through an endowed fund at ACCF.”

Jim Cutright, President/CEO of The Ashland County Community Foundation noted his appreciation for the gift, too.

“ACCF is extremely honored to hold the assets of this newly created endowment fund in memory of Mr. Heyl for the long-term benefit of HNCO,” Cutright said. “As we know, this is an excellent way to honor this man’s legacy, while helping to sustain one of our most important non-profit community partners.”

The Firelands Electric Cooperative People’s Fund has approved a grant in the amount of $1,199 to Hospice of North Central Ohio to fund the purchase of two CoaguChek Systems.

These test kits will be used by HNCO nurses to monitor patients who are risk of bleeding.

“We are indeed grateful to our friends at Firelands who continue to help equip our caregivers with the tools they need to provide the best care to our patients,” Tomassi said.

The mission of Firelands Electric Cooperative People’s Fund is the accumulation and disbursement of funds for charitable purposes in the Firelands Rural Electric service area.

The program receives its funding from members who allow their bills to be rounded up each month to the next whole dollar amount. These funds are placed in a charitable trust fund. All available funds are then distributed to qualifying charities.
