MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Police Department was called in to investigate the scene where a decomposing body was found earlier on Friday evening.

Chief Keith Porch told Richland Source that officers were dispatched to the immediate area of 300 N. Mulberry St. when a call came in about a decomposing body found in the area. Porch could not say who placed the call.

Mansfield Police and the Richland County Coroner’s Office were observed exploring the wooded area along the railroad tracks running next to the Marathon gas station at that address.

Porch confirmed the body had been found outside and in a wooded area. He said the body was at least “partially” decomposed.

Because of the condition of the body, Porch said officials asked for assistance from the anthropology department of Mercyhurst University, located in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Porch said other details like the gender or time of death of the person found have yet to be determined due to the condition of the body.

Officials were still processing the scene at the time of publication and more details will be released later, Porch said.

This is a developing story.
