ASHLAND — Ashland University’s radio station has committed to spinning vinyl records over the air for two days straight this weekend and is asking listeners to reach out with song suggestions.
WRDL, found on 88.9 FM, will join hundreds of college radio stations Saturday and Sunday in celebrating vinyl records during Vinylthon 2023.
The college radio station has participated in the event organized by the College Radio Foundation for the last five years and has earned the “Golden Slipmat Award” each year for playing vinyls over the air for at least 24 hours straight.
“This year, an additional award will be given out to stations that go 48 hours of vinyl only,” said Derek Wood, the studio’s manager and an instructor for AU’s journalism program.
Last year, the station ran vinyl records over the air for 29 hours straight and had various alumni and students ontribute to disk jockeying and hosting segments.
Wood has said Vinylthon provides students a unique experience.
“There’s an excess of very cookie-cutter radio on the commercial bandwidth and even on some of the non-commercial stations,” Wood said during Vinylthon 2022. “Very few in this area, I would say none in this listening area, are going to do this.”
Wood encouraged people to contact WRDL with song requests by calling 419-207-4889 or through social media.
The radio station is available live at 88.9 and online at WRDLFM.com.
