Several former local high school standouts closed their spring seasons in college recently, with many of them competing on the national championship stage.
Below is a look at some athletes from Ashland, Crestview, Hillsdale and Mapleton who rounded out the school year with nice finishes.
Ashland
• Tyler Sabo helped guide the Ohio State University men’s golf team to fifth place at the Big Ten Championships in late April, and the redshirt sophomore wrapped his spring season beautifully in mid-May.
The Buckeyes won the 10-team National Golf Invitational by seven shots over Utah State, as Sabo placed 12th in the three-round event at 1-under par. A former star at Ashland High School, his 68-72-75 effort represented his second under-par tournament of the season.
• The John Carroll University men’s golf team closed out a banner season in the NCAA Division III Championships, as the Blue Streaks’ 15th-place finish at nationals was the best for the program since 1997.

A sophomore, Kamden Mowry was a key component to the run. After opening the four-round event with an 8-over-par 80, Mowry went 76-77-76 to finish off his season.
• Ashland University’s women’s golf squad competed in early May at the NCAA Division II East Regional tournament, as the Eagles finished tied for 11th in the 18-team field to close their season.
Former AHS standout Klaira Paramore wrapped her junior campaign by tying for 61st with a consistently played three-round 243 (81-82-80).
• The University of Mount Union women’s golf team capped off its spring season in action at the NCAA Division III Championships.
Part of the squad for the Purple Raiders was sophomore and former Arrow Emma Packard. She carded scores of 86 and 90, as UMU missed the cut to qualify past Round 2 of the tournament.
• In softball, Brandilyn Reymer finished her junior season as the ace of the NCAA Division II Eckerd College squad.

The Tritons were 30-20 overall (16-14 Sunshine State Conference) and Reymer was responsible for half of those wins in the circle. The former Ohio Cardinal Conference Pitcher of the Year ended the spring with a 15-11 record, starting 27 games and whiffing 203 batters in 164.2 innings pitched.
Reymer tossed 21 complete games and added two saves for EC.
• A distance runner at the NCAA Division I University of Akron, Danielle Honaker placed 13th at the Mid-American Conference Championship in the 10,000 meters (37:39.11).
The former Arrow was competing in her redshirt senior season for the Zips this spring.
• On the mound in his first season for the baseball team at NCAA Division I Ohio University, former AHS ace Luke Bryant posted 12 relief appearances for the Bobcats (14-37, 9-21 Mid-American Conference).
The right-handed freshman had five scoreless outings and struck out 10 over 12.2 innings.
• The NCAA Division II baseball team at Ohio Dominican University finished its season following a run to the championship game of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament. The Panthers ended up 24-29 overall (15-16 G-MAC).
On the mound, Ashland product Chase Hunt worked 24.1 innings in his senior season, starting five games and totaling 22 strikeouts. For his career, the lefty totaled 98.2 innings pitched and 73 strikeouts over 38 appearances with the Panthers.
• In action at NCAA Division III Wilmington College, Ethan Bunce closed his freshman season with some solid totals.
The catcher played in 24 games, starting 20 of those, while accumulating 10 hits, six runs and five RBIs for the Quakers (12-24, 3-14 Ohio Athletic Conference). Bunce also drew 11 walks and was hit by a pitch 12 times, helping him post an impressive .458 on-base percentage.
Crestview
• A junior runner at Hillsdale College, Ross Kuhn closed out his spring season in a massive way, locking up All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.

After qualifying to nationals for the first time, Kuhn made a move late in his 1,500-meter final and held on for an eighth-place finish in 3:51.54.
Earlier this spring, the former Cougars state champ broke a 28-year-old HC record in the 1,500.
• Another standout trackster and Crestview graduate performing well this spring was Morgan Welch for the NAIA women’s program at Grace College.
At the NAIA National Championships, the junior competed for the 15th-place 4×800 relay (9:31.96). A few weeks earlier, she was part of the 4×400 relay that won a title at the NCCAA National Championships in 4:00.17, while also running for the fourth-place 4×800 relay (9:43.83).
Individually, Welch nabbed sixth place in the 800 at the NCCAAs, where the Lancers were national runners-up as a team.
• Wrapping up her senior season for the NCAA Division I softball team at the University of Akron, Autumn Bailey saw action in 26 games this spring.
The Crestview graduate closed her campaign with a .292 batting average in 26 games played, collecting seven hits, nine runs scored and five RBIs.
On Senior Day on May 4, Bailey had a three-run triple and a two-run double in a sweep of Kent State. She finished her career with 45 hits, 38 runs and 18 RBIs for the Zips (30-25, 15-9 MAC), who ended their season after a 2-2 effort in the MAC Tournament.
Hillsdale
• Closing out a mammoth career for the University of Findlay women’s track squad, Jordan Taylor was part of the fourth-place 4×400 relay team at the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships.
That unit turned in a program-record time of 3:33.72 to claim first-team All-American honors.
On the opening day of nationals, the graduate student and former Falcon was part of the 10th-place 4×100 relay, and she also was 13th in the 100 meters individually (11.47).
In early May, Taylor had a huge showing at the G-MAC Championship at Ashland University, where she was part of the first-place 4×100 relay and the first-place 4×400 relay, while also claiming her second G-MAC title in the 200 (23.23, a school record) and taking runner-up in the 100 (11.38).
• Also in action at Findlay, former standout Hillsdale pitcher Taylor Morgan wrapped her sophomore season for the Oilers (34-16, 19-5 G-MAC).
The righty tossed 10.2 innings for UF, striking out five batters.
As a team, Findlay made it to the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament before seeing its season come to a close.
• The Lake Erie College baseball team was 21-26 overall this spring (13-19 G-MAC), and former Hillsdale All-Ohioan Nick Kandel got a bit of time on the mound.
The left-hander worked 8.0 innings, logging seven strikeouts and a 1.13 ERA over four appearances.
• After helping lead the Falcons to the state Final Four a year ago, Jack Fickes got a few at-bats in his freshman season at NCAA Division III Thiel College.
The Tomcats finished the season 14-27 overall (10-9 Principals’ Athletic Conference) and Fickes collected three hits and three RBIs while appearing in 16 games.
Mapleton
• At NCAA Division I Niagara University, softball player Kaylee Haines capped off her junior season with a .298 batting average.
The former Mountie posted a career-high 14 hits for the Purple Eagles (11-30, 8-16 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), adding five runs, four doubles and a .382 on-base percentage while playing in 24 games.
