ASHLAND — Brian Poindexter claimed victory Tuesday as the Democratic nominee for Ohio’s 7th Congressional District.

According to final, unofficial vote totals from the Ohio Secretary of State’s office, Poindexter secured 37.02 percent of Democratic votes from residents in District 7 — which includes Ashland and Medina counties, along with portions of Cuyahoga and Wayne counties.

Poindexter is a Union ironworker, organizer and former at-large Brookpark city councilman, according to information from the Ashland County Democratic Party.

Eight candidates vied for the Democratic nomination in the primary. Below are the results for each candidate:

  • John R. Butchko: 904 (1.45 percent).
  • Laura Rodriguez-Carbone: 7,663 (12.30).
  • Ann Marie Donegan: 6,522 (10.47).
  • Michael Eisner: 7,326 (11.76).
  • Ed FitzGerald: 13,437 (21.58).
  • Keith Mundy: 688 (1.10).
  • Brian Poindexter: 23,055 (37.02).
  • Scott Schulz: 2,682 (4.31).

Below are results showing how each candidate fared in only Ashland County:

  • John R. Butchko: 28 (1.73 percent).
  • Laura Rodriguez-Carbone: 337 (20.84).
  • Ann Marie Donegan: 242 (14.97).
  • Michael Eisner: 110 (6.80).
  • Ed FitzGerald: 255 (15.77).
  • Keith Mundy: 42 (2.60).
  • Brian Poindexter: 525 (32.47).
  • Scott Schulz: 78 (4.82).

Incumbent Max Miller, currently serving his second term, was unopposed in the GOP primary. Miller still received 50,072 votes across District 7, of which 4,571 came from voters in Ashland County.

Poindexter and Miller will challenge one another in the November general election.
