ASHLAND — Students at Mapleton High School went out in the community recently to participate in the school’s annual Mapleton Cares Day.

The school’s National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society spearheaded the high school event that had students spread out at 18 different locations on May 10 between 9 a.m. and noon.

Students spread mulch, painted, planted flowers, cleaned at places like Pine Hill Farm, the Ruggles-Troy Ball Park, Nova Methodist Church, Brethren Care Village and other local spots.

“It’s important to our district to show students the value of community service and providing a helping hand to those who need it, simply for the good of helping your community,” said Corey Kline, the high school’s principal.

The school’s NHS advisor, Kerry Reisinger, said community service is part of being a good citizen.

“Part of a good citizenship is taking an active role in your community and caring for the community you live in. Volunteering benefits both the community and the volunteers themselves,” Reisinger said.

Luke Hartzler, a senior and NHS’ president said the event is important.

“It’s important for the students to give back to the community that helped mold them into the young adults they are today,” he said.
